This picture and the following pictures were taken inside the Kauri Museum at Matakohe N.Z. The kauri tree that this slab came from was struck by lightning, which killed the tree.

Swamp kauri found in the northen section of the North Island. They are finding kauri logs buried just under the ground in some of the swamp areas. This swamp kauri wood is the only kauri wood available. All living kauri trees are a protected species. The New Zealand government has made it illegal for any living kauri tree to be cut down.
